And he is a cop trying to stop the Mat Rempit menace from terrorising the public! That was an unforgettable experience for Constable Mohd Firdaus Md Ali Hairuddin, who together with Sergeant Abdul Wahid Idris, were working undercover as members of the elite Squad 42 of the City traffi c police in Tasik Sri Pemaisuri last Sunday.
He said the incident occurred during an operation against illegal racing in the area, one of the ‘hot spots’ for Mat Rempit activities.
“I was with seven plainclothes colleagues sent there at 11.30pm last Saturday (Aug 18) after roadblocks were set up in the city.
“We suspected that the illegal racers would use Tasik Sri Pemaisuri to avoid the roadblocks.” True enough, he said they saw hundreds of Mat Rempit stunt riding there.
“An hour later, six of my squad members detained three of the racers and they were taken to Jalan Bandar police station for questioning.
“Only Sergeant Wahid and me were left as we were observing a suspect riding dangerously on a Yamaha RXZ in the area.” He said when the rider and his female pillion rider stopped at a bus stop two hours later, they moved in.
“We parked our bikes in front of the couple and introduced ourselves.
“The suspect panicked and started his bike while hitting us. I had to grab him.” He said the suspect’s pillion rider then kicked and punched him on the back, together with two other accomplices, who appeared from nowhere.
It forced Abdul Wahid to pull out his gun to scare away the other Mat Rempits.
“They fl ed but the suspect fell. However, he took off his shirt, making it diffi cult for us to grab him.
“Soon after he escaped, I saw the rider of a passing Yamaha RXZ motorcycle kicking Firdaus from behind.” Mohd Firdaus sustained minor injuries on his back and knee while Abdul Wahid had several scratches on the leg.
They only got the suspect’s abandoned bike as he had fl ed on a friend’s motorcycle.
However, Abdul Wahid said he was sad that passers-by did not help them.
“There are about 50 people who saw everything but they just stood by the road.
“It looked like they were watching a show.” He said the public should be helping police to curb illegal racing activities.
“We need help from everyone.
They shouldn’t put all the burden on our shoulders.” Abdul Wahab also called on parents to monitor their children to prevent them from getting involved in illegal races and other criminal activities.-from KL Malay mail-
